The League recently published the Top 10 Reasons to Expand Medicaid.
We now have another reason – 18,000 of them actually. Based on rigorous analysis and sophisticated modeling, Families USA produced a Michigan-specific report that concludes Michigan will gain 18,000 new jobs by 2016, if Medicaid is expanded next year.
Many of the new jobs would be in fast-growing health-related professions, while others would be in unrelated areas such as construction from health facility upgrades and expansions as well as in businesses that support workers, such as restaurants, dry cleaners, gas stations. The report further estimates that the Medicaid expansion would generate nearly $2.1 billion in economic activity in 2016 through payments to providers for healthcare services and the newly created jobs.
As the federal funds circulate through Michigan’s economy, they will provide a sorely needed boost to local economies – a win for everyone. The Medicaid expansion provides the unprecedented opportunity to improve the health status of Michigan’s low-income residents through the cost-effective expansion of eligibility for the Medicaid program to 133% of the federal poverty level, provide needed access to quality medical care, while saving state funds.
It’s time for lawmakers to get on board and support healthcare coverage for hundreds of thousands of low-income, uninsured individuals and parents, and appropriate the federal funds available to support the Medicaid expansion, as recommended by the governor in the Executive Budget.
Please contact your legislators (state representative and state senator) and tell them to approve the federal dollars available to Michigan to expand Medicaid. This would provide comprehensive healthcare coverage to low-income residents and create a healthier workforce while improving Michigan’s economy and saving state funds.
