Michigan thanks Stabenow for commitment to working families
Senator cosponsors bill boosting Earned Income & Child Tax Credits

Lansing, Mich. – Michigan families today are cheering U. S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow for her support for strengthening two tax credits that benefit thousands of working families across the Great Lakes State.

Michigan League for Public Policy today joins a chorus of grassroots organizations praising Stabenow and other cosponsors of the Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2013. Stabenow’s bill enhances both the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, initiatives that lift 237,000 Michigan families out of poverty each year, including 120,000 children.

“On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Michiganders lifted out of poverty every year by these tax credits, we thank Senator Stabenow for her powerful commitment to working families,” said Gilda Z. Jacobs, president & CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy. “We are proud of Senator Stabenow’s leadership and we look forward to working with her on this bill and future tax reform efforts.”

The Working Families Tax Relief Act makes permanent 2009 enhancements to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). Stabenow’s legislation will allow more Michiganders to take advantage of the EITC by simplifying it, lowering the eligibility age and making the credit available to taxpayers who have no children. The EITC, a tax credit that benefits 847,000 low- and moderate-income working families in Michigan every year, is designed to encourage and reward work as well as to offset federal payroll and income taxes.

To claim the credits, taxpayers must have earnings from a job. The CTC, which provides taxpayers up to $1,000 for each of their dependent children under age 17, is designed to help families offset the costs of raising children. Some 566,000 working Michigan families benefit from the CTC every year.
